Transition Institute’s Weekly Roundup: 11-15 June 2012
Wondering what went on this past week in the world of public sector spin-outs and new models of public services? Below is a short break down of what went on from 11 June through 15 June.
Monday 11th June:
- EU Legislation Will Include Social Enterprise Proposals: “An advisory committee to the European Commission has said a major piece of EU legislation that could become law this year will contain proposals to boost social enterprise.”
- Business Needs to Loosen Grip on Power to Reconnect with Society, Jo Confino writes for The Guardian Sustainable Business Blog stating that “We are starting to see the first small signs that more progressive companies recognise the importance of…shared value and social impact, rather than philanthropic cash handouts.”
Tuesday 12th June:
- Transition Institute’s newest publication went live and discussed Commissioning and procurement with social value.
Wednesday 13th June:
- Government Supports Decade of Social Action Opportunities for Young Britons: “The Government believes that young people should be given the tools and opportunities to become better connected to each other and their communities across social and inter-generational divides”
- Public sector spin out case study: Kensington and Chelsea Youth Service shows that “whilst the legal side to becoming a mutual is crucial ground to cover when considering spinning out, it is achievable, whereas the strategic thinking about what employees want and how to engage staff in organisational change is much harder.”
Thursday 14th June:
- Richard Vize, of Guardian Professional, looks into Bringing Order to the Chaos of NHS Reforms: “The resilience of the public sector when under pressure is astonishing, as NHS managers repeatedly demonstrate.”
Friday 15th June:
- Joe Jervis, of Guardian Professional, previewed the Social Enterprise Coop Childcare Q&A Session: “The childcare sector is well-suited to co-op and social enterprise entrants as it relies on trust. The fact that parents are often unwilling to ‘shop around’ once a child is happy also presents an opportunity for a supplier to build loyalty and grow market share.”
- “MyCSP, the first central Government mutual, secures 15 new contracts just seven weeks after becoming the first mutual to spin out of central Government.”
